What is the BDS Movement?
The BDS Movement, short for Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions Movement, is a global campaign aimed at exerting economic, political, and social pressure on Israel to end violations of international law regarding Palestinian rights. It seeks to hold Israel accountable for its policies in the occupied territories, promote justice for Palestinians, and encourage a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Why Does Pax Christi USA Support the BDS Movement?
Pax Christi USA, a recognized section of Pax Christi International, is a Catholic peace and justice movement that advocates for nonviolence, disarmament, and demilitarization. Guided by the Gospel, Pax Christi USA supports the BDS Movement as a means of promoting justice, dialogue, and peace for Israelis and Palestinians.
By engaging in boycotts, divesting from companies that profit from human rights abuses, and advocating for targeted sanctions, Pax Christi USA aims to bring attention to the plight of Palestinians, encourage responsible corporate behavior, and contribute to the restoration of human rights and dignity for all parties involved in the conflict.
Key Initiatives of the BDS Movement Supported by Peace Church
Peace Church actively supports various initiatives endorsed by the BDS Movement, including:
- Boycotts: Peace Church encourages its members and the wider community to engage in targeted consumer, cultural, and academic boycotts of Israeli goods, services, institutions, and events that contribute to or profit from the occupation of Palestinian territories in violation of international law.
- Divestment: Peace Church advocates for divesting from companies that engage in or support practices that perpetuate human rights violations against Palestinians. By divesting from such companies, we believe that we can make a difference, both ethically and economically.
